The new junior school at Notting Hill and Ealing High School (NHEHS) is an environmentally responsible facility providing high-quality teaching environments for generations to come.
Housed across two buildings, the new Junior School for Notting Hill and Ealing High School follows a simple layout to assist with intuitive wayfinding.
The central block creates a clear, welcoming entrance at the heart of the school, providing a unique architectural focal point and enhancing the school’s street presence. The teaching accommodation is located either side in two and three storey blocks. Various forms and materials, including glazed brick and hit-andmiss brickwork, create a dynamic and engaging exterior that responds to the wider context of the NHEHS campus and Ealing location.
The interior design uses natural materials, including engineered cross-laminated timber frame, beams, and floors, which are both sustainable and aesthetically pleasing. Fully accessible internally and externally, the site includes new classrooms, additional Sixth Form classrooms, specialist teaching spaces for music, art, science, and computing, a light-filled library with a rooftop lantern, and a large hall suitable for multiple uses.
Outdoor spaces are equally important, with a science garden, forest school area, dedicated play area for Reception pupils and an additional playground for other year groups, the outside space is integral to making learning a hands-on experience.
The focal point of the school is the central foyer, a flexible, multifunctional area for informal learning, small group activities, and social interaction. The design emphasises natural light and thermal comfort, creating environments conducive to productive learning.
The library above the central foyer features a rooftop lantern which fills the room with natural light throughout the day. The interior learning spaces are complemented by outdoor learning and play environments.
“The new facilities support the school in delivering an exceptional education for the students at the school. They will allow the students to be well taught in core subjects, but also will support the provision of a broad range of activities in the sports and the arts which provide the students with a sense of identity and belonging, whilst at the same time developing lifelong passions which will enrich them throughout their lives.”
