Skills for Places

Join this Breakfast Talk exploring how Section 106 agreements can drive inclusive skills development, drawing from NLA’s Skills for Places report to support a more equitable built environment workforce.

This event builds on insights from Skills for Places, NLA’s recently launched report examining the barriers to entering the built environment sector and the pathways needed to develop a diverse, future-ready workforce.

Section 106 agreements made by developers as part of the planning process have traditionally supported affordable housing, infrastructure, and community amenities. Increasingly, they are being recognised for their potential to deliver wider social value through training, apprenticeships, and employment opportunities, particularly for underrepresented groups.

As London faces growing demand for green, digital, and cross-disciplinary expertise, this event will explore how Section 106 can be more strategically leveraged both as a tool for delivering places, and as a mechanism for long-term investment in people.

Drawing on the challenges and opportunities identified in Skills for Places, we’ll examine issues such as borough-specific recruitment restrictions, short-term project cycles, and the need for more flexible, cross-borough apprenticeship models. Through case studies and expert insights, we will explore how Section 106 can be reframed to build inclusive career pathways and respond to critical skills gaps across the sector.
