The growth of the knowledge economy is beginning to reshape and regenerate major UK cities, supporting the UK Government’s levelling up agenda as we build back better. With aims of boosting investment in R&D innovation to 2.4% of GDP by 2027, this will require a step change in business sector contributions. The UK is internationally recognised for its scientific institutions and excellence in research, but how can this be harnessed and put into practical application for commercial success? More incubator space is required for start-ups where it helps accelerate idea development between peer-to-peer and also between innovators and investors.

Manchester is developing a major new mixed-use neighbourhood where The University of Manchester is relocating its teaching and academic research activity and investing more that £1 billion in new world-class buildings and facilities. Meanwhile Glasgow has the opportunity to attract major investment for green infrastructure following COP26. How can London spearhead in increasing its incubator spaces? Who would lead an investment, or can it be a collective act? Would incubator space be a game changer and what are the challenges?
