Submissions

DEADLINE: Wednesday 15 July, 12pm

NLA is launching a major new research study into the role of the built environment sector on health.

As part of this research, we are searching for examples of projects that promote preventative care and improve health and wellbeing across the city. Entries should demonstrate, through their design, delivery and impact, how London continues to lead as a health-creating city.

Submissions can span a variety of scales; from individual buildings to neighbourhood and community initiatives, as well as city-wide infrastructure. These may include, but are not limited to, enhancing access to green and blue spaces, promoting active travel, and developing place-based infrastructure that supports the health and wellbeing of people of all ages.

We are looking for exemplary work that highlights the skills, expertise, and partnerships within the built environment sector, showcasing how these have come together to create healthier spaces in line with government ambitions for a fairer, healthier London.

Projects may include:
  • Buildings and Neighbourhoods: Commercial and residential schemes, high streets, neighbourhoods, community spaces, cultural, mixed-use projects at all scales that demonstrate exemplary approaches to health and wellbeing.
  • Green and Blue Spaces: Green and blue infrastructure, parks and waterways, placemaking and public realm, streetscapes, civic spaces, and landscape-led initiatives that promote accessibility and are aimed at improving wellbeing for individuals and communities.
  • Active Travel: Transport infrastructure, green walkways, cyclable schemes that improve air quality, positively impact physical and mental health, lower pollution and encourage activity across the city.
  • Healthcare infrastructure: Healthcare buildings, hospitals, clinics, surrounding urban infrastructure that design beyond the red line boundary to enhance health and wellbeing.
  • Borough Strategies and health frameworks: health and wellbeing strategies for long term impact that have measured or can demonstrate health improvements and support preventative care over time.

These submissions will inform the research report which demonstrates the impact the built environment has on health creation in cities, sharing best practice and highlighting some of the exceptional work that has shaped wellbeing in London.

The Research

Health Creating City, launching in October 2026, is a landmark report, exhibition and events programme examining the role of the built environment in shaping London’s future as a health-creating city. Going beyond traditional ‘healthcare', the report highlights the vital role that the built environment sector has to play in advancing preventative care, prioritising health equity, active travel and access to green and blue spaces to promote healthier outcomes for Londoners. Reflecting Sadiq Khan’s ten-year mayoral tenure (2016–2026), it reviews the health policies that have shaped London’s approach to wellbeing and examine how the built environment sector has translated these
ambitions into practice.

The NHS 10-Year Plan, published in 2025, places prevention and community-based care at its core.
Delivering this vision will depend on the expertise, innovation and cross-sector collaboration of the built environment industry to reduce health inequalities, strengthen public–private partnerships, support local care and expand equitable access to green and blue spaces for all. The research will define the key pillars of a healthy city drawing from industry expertise and insights, as well as drawing on exemplary case studies and best practice that showcase health creation on multiple scales: from healthy buildings and environments, to pedestrianised streets that reduce pollution, neighbourhood level health initiatives, and city-wide masterplanning strategies.

Research Aims
  • To showcase best practice in projects that support preventative care and prioritise health equity in cities.
  • To identify challenges and opportunities in the design of health and wellbeing at different scales.
  • To explore human-centric policies that prioritises people’s health and their impact on the built environment.
