Future City Makers

NLA’s Future City Makers programme inspires the next generation of talent for the built environment, connecting them with professionals and equipping them with skills to build fulfilling careers in the industry.

Our aim is to:

  • Inspire young people and career changers through London’s built environment, and widen their understanding of the purpose, value and skills of the industry.
  • Connect aspiring built environment professionals with the industry, and signpost to initiatives that create equal access and opportunities to all.
  • Equip students, teachers and career changers with the knowledge and tools to make informed decisions about careers in the built environment.

We support future city makers to learn about London’s built environment and the myriad of opportunities and skills a career in our sector can hold. Our world-class scale models of London and permanent and temporary exhibitions at The London Centre offer the perfect setting to learn more about the past, present and future of the city.

As London’s built environment community, our network of professionals spanning architecture, engineering, planning, construction, surveying, and more helps bring the industry to life and provides future city makers with first-hand knowledge of projects of all scales, from local to masterplans. Meeting with industry professionals provides valuable opportunities to learn more about built environment jobs, and creates role models and mentors for the next generation.

We partner and collaborate with charities and schools such as Harris Federation, City of London Academies Trust, and Inspire, to ensure all young people, no matter their background, have equal opportunities to learn about the built environment. Please get in touch with grace.simmonds@nla.london if you are interested in working together.

Download our report, Skills for Places – Inspiring Future City Makers, to find out more about the significance and value of the built environment industry and how we must all come together to demonstrate the skills and opportunities a career in our sector holds for young people and career changers.
